What is a Concierge?

The origin of the word "concierge" comes from the Latin word "conservus", and in the mid 16th century, the French term, "concierge", evolved, referring to a servant who attended to the needs of visiting royalty at a castle or a royal palace. Over time, “concierge” came to mean caretaker of an apartment complex or a small hotel, typically one living on the premises.

Later, in the 19th Century, the term “concierge” emerged in the hotel industry as a multilingual hotel staff member whose job was to assist guests by arranging tours, making theater and restaurant reservations, etc.  The Swiss, in particular, made their mark on the role of the modern concierge, and in the 20th Century, the first modern American concierge appeared in the San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel. There, European trained chief concierge Tom Wolfe established his presence in the Fairmont Hotel lobby in 1974.

But, what is a concierge today?  Very simply put, a concierge is a personal assistant, and while this evolution of the concierge industry is fairly new, the demand for the service is exploding as the number of time-starved people skyrockets.  Today’s concierge services are a new and welcomed way to find the balance you seek and that you deserve.

At Royal Palm Concierge, we are dedicated to meeting your needs and creating

that piece of mind.
